WLL is a generic term for an access system that uses wireless links, in place of conventional copper cables, to connect subscribers homes or offices to telecommunication networks. In telecommunications, WLL systems are most often used to provide the "last mile" connection.
A graphical presentation showing the differences between a wired and a wireless local loop is set out below:-
In a typical WLL system, individual subscribers equipment communicate with a base station located in the centre of each cell which in turn is connected to the PSTN through an interface unit. An urban area may have several cells arranged to allow full coverage with overlap between cells, while a suburban area might be covered with a single cell. The connection to the PSTN can be made in a variety of ways, including high speed optical cable, copper wires, microwave and satellite links.
